The city of DelftDelft is historic city in the province of South Holland in the Netherlands, close to Rotterdam and The Hague. It is more than 750 years old and owes its name to the world 'delving', digging the oldest canal, the Oude Delft. William of Orange (Willem van Oranje), the founder and ancestor of the monarchy in the Netherlands, took his residence here, was murdered and also buried. Up to modern days, the successors of his bloodline are buried in Delft and the strong ties the royal family can be experienced by visiting historic places like "Het Prinsenhof" or the "Nieuwe Kerk". Delft is famous for its blue pottery, called "Delft Blue" which was manufactored in several factories during the 17th century. Royal Delft is the last manufactur that remained from this epoch till now. It is recommended, to witness the craftsmanship at this place. The famous dutch painter Jan Vermeer was born and active in Delft as well. You might know his painting to the right. Delft was and is a place important to science, most known for the inventor "Antony van Leeuwenhoek", who was the first to discover microorganism by developing advanced lenses for microscopie in the 17th century.
